ASUU Strike Extended by 3 Months – See Why

The President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Emmanuel Osodeke has explained that the decision of the union to extend its ongoing strike for another 12 weeks was to enable the Federal Government address issues in the agreement it had with it in concrete terms.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that extension by another 12 weeks, will make it 20 weeks students will stay at home.
Osodeke told NAN in a telephone interview on Monday in Abuja said that the extension was due to the Federal Government failure to implement the agreement entered with the union.
NAN reports that the union had embarked on a nationwide warning strike from Feb. 14 to press home its members’ demands.
The first warning strike started on Feb. 14 for four weeks and the second strike commenced on March 15 for another four weeks, while the third one is announced on May 9 for another 12 weeks.
The lecturers’ demands include funding of the Revitalisation of Public Universities, Earned Academic Allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) and promotion arrears.
Others are the renegotiation of 2009 ASUU-FG Agreement and the inconsistency in Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System.
NAN recalls that the union during its last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting noted that it was disappointed that government had not treated the matters with utmost urgency they deserved and as expected of a reasonable, responsive, and well-meaning administration.
“NEC viewed government’s response so far as a continuation of the unconscionable, mindless and nonchalant attitude of the Nigerian ruling elite toward the proven path of the national development which is education.
“NEC, having taken reports on the engagement of the trustees and principal officers with the government concluded that government had failed to satisfactorily address all the issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action within the four-weeks-roll over strike period.
“NEC resolved that the strike be rolled over for another 12 weeks to give government more time to address all the issues in concrete terms so that government will resume as soon as possible, ”it said. (NAN)

Subscription-Revenue Decline: Netflix Sacks 150 Staff

Netflix has laid off 150 full-time employees in the United States.
This is a result of a fallout of a significant drop in its revenue. According to reports, the recent retrenchment affects employees across departments in the organization. This includes 70 part-time positions in the animation, social media, and publishing divisions.
At least 26 contractors working on the company’s fan-focused Tudum website, which acts as an addition to Netflix’s content were also affected. Last month, the Tudum subdivision was exclusively impacted by a similar fate, with over 25 roles in the marketing section.
This new decision is coming less than a month after the streaming giant laid off at least ten full-time employees and contractors from its editing and marketing departments. The Netflix management has explained that the choice is unrelated to individual performances. They also said that the laid-off employees will be compensated.
Netflix’s revenue income has been on a decline recently. For the first time in a decade, it disclosed a sharp reduction in subscribers in the first quarter of 2022, with a net loss of 200,000 streaming clients. The business also forecasted a 2 million subscriber drop in the second quarter. On April 20, the company’s worth dropped by $54 billion as a result of this.

BREAKING: Lagos Gov bans Okada in Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, 3 other LGs

Total Ban on Okada in Lagos
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has banned the operations of commercial motorcycles popularly called Okada, in six Local Governments.
The governor announced that the ban is “indefinite and total”.
The six local governments listed by the governor are Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa.
The Governor gave out the directive at a meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) at the State House in Alausa.
The fresh Okada ban followed the February 2020 restriction placed on the activities of commercial motorcycles.
Sanwo-Olu said the Government took the decision in line with the State’s Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 to immediately address the chaos and menace created by the operations of Okada in the listed areas.
He told the police to enforce the order without compromise.
He said, “After a critical review of our restriction on Okada activities in the first six Local Government Areas where we restricted them on February 1, 2020, we have seen that the menace has not abated. We are now directing a total ban on Okada activities across the highways and bridges within these six Local Government and their Local Council Development Areas, effective from June 1, 2022.
“This is a phased ban we are embarking on this period, and we expect that within the short while when this ban will be enforced, Okada riders in other places where their activities are yet to be banned can find something else to do. We have given the notice now and we expect all commercial motorcycles plying the routes in the listed councils and areas to vacate the highways before enforcement begins. The enforcement will be total.”
The ban is coming days after Okada riders killed a young man in the Lekki area of Lagos State over N100 balance.
It was learnt that the victim, who was a sound engineer, was lynched and burnt to death after a misunderstanding ensued over the N100 balance with one of the commercial motorcyclists.
