Coming soon – Sea of Stars

A worthy tribute to the JRPG is coming soon!

Who as a child never played a JRPG or RPG? We spent hours and hours playing these games with turn-based battle systems. The new generations of JRPGs begin to balance with better graphics and 3D modeling, such as Sea Of Stars , which is the game that we will talk about next, it is undoubtedly a worthy tribute to these games that we like so much and the creators have some words for us.

Sea of Stars

Sabotage was founded with one clear goal in mind: to introduce our own “definitive editions” of the game genres you loved as a child. They combined retro aesthetics and modern design, and we looked for experiences that captured what they loved about old games while leaving out elements that might be dated today.

Sabotage Studio started its own turn-based RPG with simple guidelines. They wanted a seamless transition between navigation and combat, and no random encounters or grinding. Of course combat is important, so let’s break it down a bit more.

royal shifts

In Sea of Stars, combat is entirely turn-based and there are no time bars, which takes the pressure off; thus, the player can make decisions at their own pace. Each of the 6 playable characters comes with a small kit of 4 spells or abilities with different damage types and patterns. In addition, they can be combined with the movements of other characters.

MP is capped very low, but regenerates when normal attacks are used, creating a flow where magic use is expected in a common fight. On the other hand, when fighting a boss you have to pace the big spells with some normal attacks.

The lack of chance encounters means that each fight is handcrafted to offer a unique pattern of enemies that the intelligent Solstice Warrior can analyze and optimize, and the other combat features provide a balance between utility and damage.

padlocks

Enemies that set up spells or special abilities display a bar of locks, each with an icon for a certain type of damage. Breaking a lock weakens the next move, and if you break all of them, the move is permanently interrupted.

Each of the 6 playable characters can efficiently deal damage on one or two of the types, and they also have a kit of abilities or spells that provide pattern variations (such as area of effect or multi-hit).

synchronized hits

To make turn-based combat more engaging, pressing the action button in sync with the animations increases the amount of damage dealt and reduces damage taken.

Pressing a button at the right time can influence the outcome of almost any combat action, whether it’s bouncing a lunar shell back and forth, blocking enemy attacks, or pulling a better snack out of your backpack.

Sea of Stars

All combat actions accumulate energy which is eventually converted into combo points. They can be used to perform double attacks by combining the patterns and damage types of both characters.

Combo Points are the only cost (doesn’t consume MP) and are lost when the battle ends, so there’s no downside to spending them!

improvements

Normal attacks generate “living mana”, and any playable character can absorb it when they need extra help. Buffs can be stacked a maximum of three times, with each buff adding a portion of the character’s magic attack to the next action. It also comes in handy when you need the magic damage type that only one character has, but they’re out of MP.

Sea of Stars

Quick change without friction

While the battlegroup allows a maximum of three characters on screen, you can swap any active character with an inactive one at any time and at no cost. He doesn’t even use a turn!

What else does Sea of Stars offer?

Here is a short list of other key systems and considerations related to the vision of the game:

  • Movement without limits:  swim, climb, jump or climb ledges and navigate the world with fluidity thanks to the navigation system based on a platform experience that frees itself from the classic restricted movements.
  • Full Dynamic Lighting –   Creating a stunning world brought to life by pushing the limits of 2D pixel art games.
  • A Story-Rich Adventure –  Experience a captivating journey with dozens of original characters and storylines. Sometimes epic, sometimes silly or emotional, Sea of Stars does its RPG duty and explores classic themes of adventure and friendship, and is also packed with twists and unexpected events that are characteristic of a Sabotage production.
  • A world you can touch:  There are plenty of ways to hang out in the world of Sea of Stars if you feel the need to put adventures aside and change the pace. You can sail, cook, fish or visit a tavern to listen to a song or play the famous board game known as “Wheels”…

Sea of Stars will be available on PS4 and PS5 next year. Stay tuned for the arrival of this homage to JRPGs!

Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG based on the classics. It tells the story of two Solstice Children who combine the powers of the sun and the moon to perform an Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of ending the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as the Fleshmancer.
